Beijer Electronics has secured a strategic order from the Port of Gothenburg (Göteborgs Hamn AB). This Port, the largest in Scandinavia with oil and dry bulk terminals, has bought CitectSCADA as its super-ordinate SCADA system.
"Infrastructure solutions are one of our priorities," commented Lars Ekelund, CEO of Beijer Electronics Automation AB, "we see significant growth opportunities in open and scalable off-the-shelf systems as an alternative to brand-specific control and monitoring solutions. Having the option of choosing the same system for, say, security, production, real estate and energy monitoring offers major synergies."
Beijer Electronics' targeted initiative has resulted in the company delivering solutions for a series of large-scale civil engineering projects such as the City Tunnel project in southern Sweden, the Södra länken, Norrortsleden and Nordsydaxeln highway links around Stockholm and Botniabanan rail-link in northern Sweden.
The Port of Gothenburg's intention is to utilize the super-ordinate CitectSCADA system to build a shared, integrated, supplier-independent industrial control platform. At present there are a number of different branded control systems, serving various operations and applications. Some of the functions CitectSCADA will manage wholly or partly are entry and exit control, lighting control, alarm management of ramps and cranes, monitoring energy consumption, monitoring loading/unloading of oil and estate monitoring. The platform will also be enabled for future opportunities to integrate parts of system security and digital CCTV.
Multi-stage Build-out
The first stage involves preparing a platform for the various parts of the operation based on a sector-specific framework developed by Beijer Electronics. The next stage is to start implementing various elements. An integrated industrial control system will be operational within a five-year period so that effective resource staffing can control multiple systems from a single centrally placed function. A part from control systems, an array of real estate and ERP systems will be compatible with CitectSCADA. The actual design process will be structured so that current and future control systems for the various businesses can be seamlessly integrated. This will also create the right preconditions for some functional integration between part of the underlying systems.
